Soybean Sensitivity

Soybeans are native to Southeast Asia and are widely cultivated in the United States.  With the development of the soybean processing industry in the 1920's, many uses were found for the seed.  Soybean meal is used in many foods and as food for livestock.

Avoid these ingredients:

  • Miso
  • Soy flour
  • Soy nuts
  • Soy protein
  • Soy protein isolate
  • Lecithin

Be careful – these products may indicate the presence of soy:

  • Vegetable broth
  • Vegetable gum
  • Vegetable starch

Foods that may contain soy – check labels carefully

  • Bakery goods made with soy flour and soy milk
  • Store bought cookies, crackers, zwieback and pretzels
  • Some dry cereals and cream of wheat
  • Soy flour and lecithin is used in some hard candy, nut candy and caramel
  • Some brands of ice cream and instant pudding
  • Egg beaters (egg substitutes)
  • Milk substitutes – Isomil, Prosobee, etc.
  • Soy sauce and tofu
  • Worcestershire sauce and some seasoning mixes
  • Pork link sausage, lunch meats, and soups may contain TVP (textured vegetable protein)
  • Check ingredients in fast food – especially meats and buns
  • Fresh soy sprouts
  • Soy nuts – roasted and salted used instead of peanuts
  • Soy flour used in noodles and macaroni
  • Dry lemonade mix
