A Positive Experience
The Asthma and Allergy Center is ranked well above the national average for positive research experiences among patients. At least 96% of our patients feel that being in a study was a positive experience, and 100% of our patients polled said they would recommend the experience to friends and family.

Participants receive a high standard of care.
All participants receive regular care related to the study and opportunities to talk to medical professionals about their condition. Research shows that people involved in studies tend to do somewhat better than people in a similar stage of their disease who are not enrolled, regardless of whether the experimental treatment was successful. Scientists believe this advantage may be due to the high quality of care generally provided during clinical studies.

No investigational treatment advances to clinical testing unless there is strong evidence indicating it will be as good or better than currently available therapies.

How safe are clinical studies?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has established a rigorous sequence of testing for experimental drugs. The system gradually builds evidence for a drug's effectiveness and determines that a drug has an acceptable “safety profile” (that is, the risks associated with its use are reasonable, given its potential benefit). Experimental drugs must perform well enough in each phase to be allowed to progress to the next phase.

Patients will never begin a study without being fully informed about the study and all their questions are answered. Patients are also able opt out of the study at anytime.

“As a chronic asthmatic, I have participated in many studies over the years at The Asthma & Allergy Center.  I feel like asthma and allergy studies teach you about yourself and your body, as well as possibly helping others in the future.  The study coordinators always explain the study and situations very well, and I've never felt like a "guinea pig" being in a study.  Also, study medication is provided for most studies, and a stipend is provided for your time and efforts when the study is complete.  These studies can be a very good learning experience and are not difficult to participate in.”
